Gateway to Matakana Coast Wine Country
Puhoi (meaning ‘Slow Water’) has a rich historical bohemian past.
The Historic township of Puhoi is the entry to the Matakana Coast Wine Country. Puhoi's history dates back to 1863 when it was settled by immigrants from Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). A group of 82 immigrants arrived in Puhoi 124 days after leaving their homeland, having traveled in Maori canoes for the final four miles of their journey up the Puhoi river.
Today the Puhoi's Bohemian pioneer past is proudly remembered by the community. Its history has given Puhoi a unique atmosphere, which the iconic Puhoi Village Pub echoes. The interior of the Puhoi Pub is like a museum in itself, showcasing photos, tools and old-time farm memorabilia. Other historical places of interest to visit while in Puhoi are: Bohemian Museum, Church of Saints Peter & Paul, Puhoi Centennial Hall, The Landing Stone, Puhoi Town Library & Puhoi Historic Wharf.
While in Puhoi there are a range of activities you can go - Kayaking or Canoeing down the Puhoi River, follow the Puhoi Heritage Trail, enjoy the Te Araroa Puhoi Track, Dunns Bush Walk or go Horse riding. Puhoi has some great eateries, such as the Puhoi Pub, Puhoi Valley Cafe & Cheese Store & Puhoi Cottage Tea Rooms.
Puhoi Village also has a great range of accommodation on offer from boutique cottages to luxury lodges.
