Mahurangi Peninsula
A glorious drive along the ridge will reward you with spectacular views of turquoise bays, green islands and golden beaches.
Just north of Puhoi on State Highway One you can turn off to the Mahurangi Peninsula.
At the end of the road (veer right down the hill) you'll come to Mahurangi Regional Park, which includes stunning bay - Mita Bay (Otuawao Bay), Sullivan's Bay (Otarawao Bay) & Te Muri Beach. The Regional Parks glorious beaches, walking tracks, four Department of Conservation (DOC) campsites and a small number of DOC baches available for rent to provide the perfect holiday destination. Perfect for swimming, fishing, kayaking, diving and relaxing.
Mahurangi West Regional Park was the ancestral domain of Ngäti Rongo and there are four fortified pa sites at Opahi, Cudlip and Te Muri Points and above Sullivan’s Bay. More than 100 Maori and European settlers are buried in the Te Muri upupa (cemetery) in the park. The cemetery dates back to 1860, and is watched over by two ancient and sacred pohutakawa trees.
Some of the baches are accessible only by water, so you can really get away from it all. Mahurangi East can be seen across the harbour, which is accessible via Snell's beach on Ridge Road, home to Scott Homestead, a beautiful historic house built in 1877 and recently restored to a high standard.
